Biščević House
Mostar, Herzegovina
The Biščević House, constructed of a blend of stone and wood, is part of an Ottoman complex built in the 18th century. This house is thought to be the former selamluk (public quarters) of the larger dwelling complex in which it sits. The house contains a special reception room (ćošak) which projects beyond the tall stone wall that rises from the rocky banks of the Neretva River. The courtyard view shows the wooden stair, column, balcony, beams, flooring, and railings that are intricately detailed using sets of simple chisels. (photo 1987)
