View of Pazari (market) from citadel
Gjirokastër, Albania
Old Gjirokastra's monuments include a hilltop castle (an ancient site enlarged during the Ottoman era), the center with bazaar, and several hillside residential quarters. This view looks down from the citadel toward the intersection of five streets (the Qafë or Neck) that mark the center of the pazari (market) area. The small dome and minaret of the 18th century Bazaar Mosque (Xhamia e Pazarit) can be seen to the left of the intersection. The dominant stone roofs are evidence of the town's principal construction material.
