View of Old Town
Gjirokastër / Gjirokastra, Albania
Gjirokastër is a town and municipality in southern Albania that was first recorded in the 14th century, and has a history traced to pre-Roman or Illyrian times. The city was seized by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century and remained an important center of the southern Albanian Sandjak until the Empire collapsed in the early 20th century. The old city has been conserved as a museum city with numerous grand tower dwellings constructed by wealthy landowners and Ottoman appointees during the later years of the Ottoman period.
