Farm compound with Kulla
Domgjon, Albania
The masonry tower dwelling in this photograph is a typical dwelling type in the Dukagjin highlands of northern Albania. Rural kullë are dwellings within farm compounds that include other economic structures. While kullë were first built in the 17th century, most date from the 18th and 19th centuries. They provided security during the inter-clan blood feuds of this area, with storage at the base and living quarters above. This kulla has few openings, and a corbelled hearth at the top level.
