Principal Dwelling, showing east entry
Sirogojno, Serbia
This principal dwelling (kuća) setting has many of the characteristics of the ideal site; it has a sloping southwest orientation on a piece of land to capture the warmth of the sun for an extended time. The lower stone base serves as a root cellar and can also hold animals in the winter months. There are two doors on this dwelling. The eastern door, seen here, is traditionally the entry door; the east symbolizing the beginning of the day. This is also the door where a bride first enters the dwelling, new borns enter, guests are welcomed, and prepared food is brought for dining. (photo 1988)
