Jovanovića Kuća, interior view
Pirot, Serbia
On the upper floor, the projecting bay over the garden entrance contains a divanhana, a raised sitting area separated from the large central hall by glazed partitions. Men would relax in this space during social gatherings, able to observe both indoor activities and the exterior garden (a separate space was reserved for women). Colorful kilims cover the floor, perimeter seating, and window frames. This type of gathering space would be open rather than glazed in a more ordinary dwelling.
