Štip - Novo Selo, Macedonia
Štip in east central Macedonia, and was the capital of the Paeonion people in the 5th century BCE. It became an important settlement in the 6th century CE during Byzantine and medieval times and an important trade center during the Ottoman period. Novo Selo (new village) dates back to the 14th century CE and contains religious buildings from that period and dwellings from the 19th and early 20th century. A number of these are protected as cultural monuments. The arched gateway in the distance leads to the church of Sveta Bogorodica (Mother of God). (photo 1988)
