View of dwellings from dike road
Lukavec, Croatia
Lukavec is a small village within Velika Gorica to the south of the Sava River. The Turopolje region has rich alluvial plains and the Sava and its tributaries have shifted over time and created interesting oxbow formations. The meandering rivers led settlers to form dikes to protect the dwellings from flooding and the shifting river beds. The wooden plank dwellings of the 18th and 19th century were built on the higher areas or behind the dikes. A traditional dwelling in this region is referred to as a čardak or katnica and had its primary living space one storey above the ground. (photo 1988)
