Traditional Wooden Dwelling, Čardak
Brest Pokupski, Croatia
The village of Brest Pokupski is located on the banks of the Kupa River in the Banovina region of Croatia. The Kupa River flows from the western side of the Kapela range of the Dinaric Alps to form the Pokuplje basin and to join with the Sava River. The čardak (or katnica) is the traditional dwelling type of the Turopolje and Pokuplje region, and contains space for animals, grains, and agricultural equipment on the ground level and living spaces on the floor above. The region had an aboundance of oak forests in the past; the dwellings were constructed of logs and planks. (photo 1988)
