Asenova Mahala district along the river
Veliko Tărnovo, Bulgaria
A neighborhood of Veliko Tărnovo, the historic Asenova Mahala is located on the banks of the Yantra River as it winds to the northeast of the city center. Homes and shops of former craftsmen and merchants were clustered along a street parallel with the river edge, and around the Church of St. Demetrius (1185), just visible above the rooftops. Few of historic structures remain but the traditional character of the district survives.
