Velagića Kuća complex
Blagaj, Herzegovina
This 18th-century dwelling, on the bank of the Buna River downstream from the Dervish monastery, takes unique advantage of its riverside setting. At the ground level, running water from the river is diverted through the kitchen and bathing area. Upper level living quarters include a room facing the river, taking advantage of its cooling effects on typically hot summer days. On the opposite side is an open porch overlooking a private courtyard and garden. Other houses around courtyards complete the larger family compound, a notable example of residential architecture in Herzegovina.
