Old Town narrow street with çardak over entry
Berat, Albania
Streets in the old town are paved in stone, with shallow steps at intervals on slopes. Adjacent properties are bounded with stone walls, their buildings often set directly against the street. This view shows the entry portal to a dwelling sited at an intersection where a path enters the alley from the right. The wooden doors are set into an opening below a stone arch and protected by a tiled pent roof in the wall above. The house lies beyond, its upper rooms projecting over the street. A covered porch, or çardak (chardak) provides an open-air overlook for the dwelling's residents. (photo 2015)
